The Estate

The Widaine Estate is a 70,000-hectare sporting estate based on the banks of Lake Bin El Ouidane in the Azilal province of Morocco Atlas Mountains.

The area is renowned for its steep and undulating topography and hosts a vast range of unusual flora and fauna that you will struggle to find anywhere else in the world, including Barbary partridge, boar, quail, pigeons, and doves.

Lake Bin El Oudine covers 1,300 hectares of the estate. The lake is approximately 7 kilometres long, and its clear waters and scenic views make it a popular destination for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts. The lake is also known for its fishing, with species such as carp, black bass, and pike being found in its waters.

Barbary Partridge

The Barbary partridge (Alectoris barbara) is a game bird species native to North Africa, including Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.

Barbary partridge are medium-sized birds, typically measuring about 32-36 centimetres in length and weighing around 400-600 grams. They have brown and buff plumage with distinctive black and white markings on their heads and faces. They also have short, rounded wings and robust and sturdy build.

The season for partridge shooting in Morocco runs from October to the end of March. They are becoming very popular game bird due to their extended season and fast and agile flying ability. These birds are typically found in rocky, arid habitats like hillsides and mountainous regions like the Atlas Mountains.

They are primarily herbivorous and feed on various plant materials, including seeds, fruits, and leaves. They typically breed between May and July, with the female laying a clutch of around 10-15 eggs. The male and female both take turns incubating the eggs, which hatch after about 23 days.

A Day In The Field - Partridge Shooting In Morocco

Shootdays start at 08:30 with a buffet breakfast on the top floor of the hotel, overlooking the lake. At 09:30 we will load into 4x4s and head to the first drive where you will be introduced to your loaders and shown to your pegs.

Typically we shoot 4 or 5 drives with a break after the 3rd for a traditional Tagine, BBQ’d partridge, and a selection of local side dishes. The shooting is challenging, we make full use of mountain valleys and paths the partridge will either be flying fast downhill or towering off of the steep cliffs.

There are 55 separate drives on the estate so if you wish to shoot back-to-back days, you won’t shoot the same drives twice.

At the end of the day we head back to the hotel, usually around 16:00. You will have time to get changed, relax and use the hotel’s spa, pool, or other facilities before we meet for drinks, watch the sunset over the lake and have dinner.
